Originally constructed in 1981, the renovation and expansion of Grace Ward Harby Junior High School enabled student capacity to increase from 800 to 1,000. A classroom wing was added between two existing buildings, including 22 new classrooms and a generous, flexible learning space. The existing leaking swimming pool was filled in and converted into new locker room spaces and a weight room. The library was relocated from the center of the building via an addition near the cafeteria. The design also featured a new black box theater, stage, band and choir spaces, and new administrative offices with secure entrances.

The remaining classrooms, kitchen, fine arts, science, and athletic areas were completely rebuilt and reorganized to be on par with the new schools being constructed in the district. A complete mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology overhaul brought the building up to the high energy-efficient standards Alvin ISD is known for.

The existing brutalist tilt-wall concrete structure was reskinned completely with a thin brick masonry system to give the school a timeless look. New window openings were cut where necessary to bring as much natural light into the facility as possible. All classrooms have windows or Solatubes that bring natural light inside the building to create a warm and calming learning environment.
