Critical River Infrastructure Restoration in Kentucky’s Union County

Kentucky’s Union County received a disaster declaration resulting from extreme weather in February and March 2018, and sought available FEMA assistance to rebuild critical infrastructure. It partnered with GPD to secure the funding and to complete necessary projects.

GPD worked with county leaders to secure $730K specifically for the repair and mitigation of the Ohio Riverbank immediately upstream of the Blackburn Boat Ramp, which is critical to local emergency operations. The boat ramp is used for life-saving measures multiple times annually and also serves as a critical backup to provide boat access to the other side of the river in the event that the Ohio River Bridge along Highway 56 is damaged or washed out.

GPD worked with FEMA to address any questions or concerns about mitigation approaches and methodology. Design of the proposed recommendations is currently underway with anticipated completion in 2021.
